Building On Our History ::..
The Sisters of Charity, a religious congregation within the Catholic Church, was founded in Ireland by Mother Mary Aitkenhead in 1815. Five Sisters came to Australia in 1838 and gradually established hospitals and schools to cater for the sick and the uneducated, especially those who were most disadvantaged.
- 1952 - The land on which Mt Olivet stands was given to the Sisters of Charity by Miss Mary Bedford herself a non-Catholic, in honour of her good friend Dr Lilian Cooper, who had been the first woman doctor registered in Queensland. Miss Bedford's wish was that the Sisters would establish a hospice for the sick and dying especially those who were poor.
- 1953 - Mother Giovanni Ackman, a convert to Catholicism from Judaism arrived in Brisbane to establish the hospital. The Mt Olivet Chapel has been named in Mother Giovanni's honor.
- 1954 - Archbishop James Duhig lays the foundation stone.
- 1957 - Archbishop Duhig opens the 176 bed hospital: Total cost 428,000 pounds.
- 1963 - Sister M. Magdalen Burke appointed Sister Administrator.
- 1965 - Three new floors opened providing 111 more beds.
- 1968 - Bequests provide funds to clear debts and purchase adjoining properties.
Plans for the building of Marycrest Retirement Centre announced.
- 1972 - Sr Julien Pearson appointed Sister Administrator.
- 1977 - Marycrest Retirement Centre opened.
- 1979 - Sr Nola Riley appointed Sister Administrator.
- 1980's - Palliative Care services established including home care program.
Rehabilitation services established.
- 1992 - Mt Olivet Hospital incorporated and became known as Mt Olivet Community Services Limited (MOCS).
- 1994 - First Lay Administrator appointed.
- 1997 - Interim Care service established.
- 1999 - Renovations take place to the fifth and sixth floors.
- 2000 - Sisters of Charity and Holy Spirit Sisters in Queensland form an alliance.
- 2006 - Executive and Administrative Management of Mt Olivet's Aged Care services and Hospital separated.
St Vincent's and Holy Spirit Health formed.
- 2007 - Rebranding of Mt Olivet Community Services Aged Care to Caritas Care.
- 2008 - Multi million redevelopment of the entire Mt Olivet site commences.
The Hospital changes its name to St Vincent's Hospital Brisbane
